JAKARTA - The competition in the artificial intelligence industry is getting hotter. Anthropic, the developer of the chatbot Claude, confirmed its commitment to maintaining an ad-free service model while launching an open dig at its main rival, OpenAI. This was done through a series of ads that will air at the Super Bowl this weekend.

In a statement released Wednesday, February 4, Anthropic confirmed that they would not include ads in user conversations with Claude. This attitude is in contrast to OpenAI's move in mid-January to announce plans to test ads for some ChatGPT users as part of a monetization strategy.

"There are many good places to advertise. The conversation with Claude is not one of them," Anthropic wrote on its official website. The company insists that Claude is designed to fully favor user interests, without the influence of advertisers, sponsored links, or unsolicited placement of third-party products.

One of Anthropic's most talked-about ads depicts a young man consulting a therapist on how to better communicate with his mother. The therapist's answer initially sounds like a typical response to artificial intelligence, complete with praise and practical advice, before suddenly turning into a promotion for a fictional dating service. The ad satirically highlights concerns about the commercialization of AI-based conversations.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the ad is scheduled to air during the Super Bowl, making it one of the most prestigious stages for Anthropic to convey its business message while also poking fun at OpenAI.

ChatGPT itself is still the most dominant product in the AI industry explosion. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has driven a wave of AI technology adoption that has affected the global financial market and business world. By the end of December, OpenAI recorded nearly 900 million weekly ChatGPT users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also responded to Anthropic's ad through a post on the X platform. He admitted that the ad was funny and made him laugh, but questioned its honesty. Altman even called Anthropic an authoritarian company, a comment that further confirmed the heat of the rivalry between the two companies.

Outside OpenAI, Google with the Gemini model is also a major competitor in the consumer AI market. However, Anthropic's focus on AI solutions for businesses and developers opens up a new competitive field. The programming assistant Claude Code, for example, has gone viral among developers and is touted as one of the factors that triggered the recent sell-off in the software sector.

While insisting on keeping Claude ad-free, Anthropic is not closing the door to monetization. The company expressed interest in the concept of agentic commerce, where Claude can act on behalf of a user to complete a purchase or reservation in its entirety, as long as it is chosen and controlled directly by the user.

Anthropic also plans to develop a feature that allows users to search, compare, and buy products, as well as connect with business actors without sacrificing the integrity of AI conversations.

Amid speculation that Anthropic and OpenAI are both preparing to list on the stock exchange, the competition between the two is expected to intensify. Starting from the scramble for users, the difference in business models, to the narrative of ethics and the future of artificial intelligence, the AI war seems to have just entered a more open phase.
