JAKARTA - Poland has asked the European Commission to investigate TikTok, after the social media platform aired AI-generated content related to calls for Poland to withdraw from the European Union.
Deputy Minister for Digitalization Dariusz Standerski stated that the content threatened public order, information security, and the integrity of democracy in Poland and throughout the European Union.
"The content revealed poses a threat to public order, information security, and the integrity of the democratic process in Poland and throughout the European Union," he said in a letter sent to the European Commission, Reuters reported.
According to him, the AI content shows that TikTok has failed to fulfill its obligations as a Very Large Online Platform under EU law.
"The nature of the narrative, the way it is spread, and the use of synthetic audiovisual material show that the platform has failed to meet the obligations imposed on it as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP)," he added.
A Polish government spokesman said on Tuesday that the content of the recording was undoubtedly Russian disinformation because the recording contained Russian language syntax.
Meanwhile, the TikTok account associated with the video has disappeared. TikTok and the European Commission did not immediately comment on the request.
For information, last year, the European Commission opened legal proceedings against ByteDance, for allegedly failing to limit election content, especially in the Romanian presidential election in November 2024.
Poland has asked the European Commission to start legal proceedings over an alleged breach of the EU's Digital Services Act governing how the world's largest social media companies operate in Europe.
