JAKARTA - The Italian Antimonopoly Authority (AGCM) ordered Meta Platforms to stop rules that hinder the presence of third-party Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots on WhatsApp.
This order was issued at a time when Meta was under investigation for alleged abuse of the company's dominance. According to the AGCM, Meta's behavior could restrict market access and development in the AI services industry.
By forcing Meta to remove the third-party AI ban on WhatsApp, the Italian regulator wants to provide consumers with more choices and maintain healthy business competition.
In response to the order, Meta claimed to object. According to Meta, the regulator's decision has major flaws so they plan to file a lawsuit to cancel the decision.
"We will appeal because this decision is fundamentally flawed," a Meta spokesperson said, citing Reuters on Wednesday, December 24. Meta said the emergence of AI chatbots on WhatsApp put a huge strain on their systems, which were not ready.
If Meta is still forced to lift the ban on third-party AI blocking, chatbots such as ChatGPT and Copilot could return to WhatsApp. Users no longer need to download the chatbot application because interactions can be carried out on WhatsApp.
