JAKARTA The latest study from the Pew Research Center reveals the trend of using chatbots among US teenagers. The results of the study show that three out of ten teenagers use chatbots every day.

This high adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots was driven by the massive use of the internet among teenagers. The daily use of the internet among US teenagers is very high. About 97 percent of teenagers stated that they are online every day.

Meanwhile, 40 percent of respondents said they were 'almost always online'. That is, they access the internet for almost a full day. Although this figure has decreased compared to last year, this figure remains higher than the survey about a decade ago.

With so many AI chatbot options today, the technology also accompanies the user's activities. Of the total respondents collected by Pew Research, 4 percent of teenagers stated that they use AI chatbots almost continuously.

ChatGPT is the most popular chatbot used by 59 percent of US teens. This figure is twice as high as the two closest competitors, namely Gemini from Google with a percentage of 23 percent and Meta AI with a percentage of 20 percent.

The Pew study also detailed how the background of race, age and income affected chatbot adoption. About 68 percent of black and historical teens use chatbots, higher than 58 percent of white teens.

Black teenagers are twice as likely to use Gemini and Meta AI as white teens. In addition, older teenagers aged 15 to 17 tend to use AI social media more often and chatbots.

In terms of income, teenagers from households earn more than US$75 thousand (Rp1.2 billion) more often using ChatGPT. However, the Character.AI platform is twice as popular in income households below that threshold.
