JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed the results of research related to digital payments among the public. Research results show that there is a gap in technology adoption.

In a study conducted in the Jabodetabek area, BRIN said that the gap in technology adoption in making digital payments was very visible. This gap also reached tens of percent.

The phenomenon found by the research team is referred to as a general leapfrogging. This phenomenon refers to the leap of technology adoption between the younger generation and the older generation.

"Generation Z, millennials, and X show the ownership and use of smartphones of more than 91 percent," said BRIN Transportation Technology Research Center researcher Dwi Phalita Wageita, quoted from the official BRIN website on Thursday, November 27.

On the other hand, Dwi said that the baby boomers generation was left behind in adopting smartphones. The ownership rate and use of smartphones in this generation only reaches 73 percent, 18 percent smaller than the younger generation.

Not only is the adoption of its lower smartphones, but baby boomers are said to be more inclined towards conventional transactions, both for retail services and public transportation payment systems. This shows there are obstacles in the transition to wireless transactions.

Dwi explained that the main challenges of digital payment adoption include intuitivity and ease of use for the elderly. In addition, telecommunications infrastructure problems and digital literacy gaps are also supporting factors.

Seeing this challenge, BRIN emphasized that policymakers must embrace the older generation in implementing digital payments. Service access for vulnerable groups must also be maintained and not eliminated by digital systems.
