Spotify Acquires WhoSampled For Strengthening Music Information

JAKARTA Spotify, a popular music streaming platform, officially acquired WhoSampled, a community that provides and manages databases for the purpose of tracking sample music usage.

This acquisition was announced on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. This acquisition includes London-based WhoSampled team as well as all their community-run databases, but it was not disclosed how much the acquisition nominal was.

WhoSampled was founded in 2008 and has now tracked more than 1.2 million songs and nearly 622,000 samples. This large data will be used to support Spotify's new features, one of which is a musical information disclosure tool such as SongDNA.

The WhoSampled team welcomes this deal. They stated that Spotify has the same belief regarding the importance of the music context. They believe Spotify has a vision to help listeners dive into favorite songs in depth.

"Spotify has shown a sincere commitment to our mission and we feel WhoSampled is the right place for us," said the WhoSampled team. The WhoSampled mobile app can also be downloaded for free in the near future.

In its official announcement, the WhoSampled team also stated that its platform and brand will continue to operate after this acquisition. They hope this acquisition can provide improvement once the data is integrated into the Spotify platform.

WhoSampled also promises a number of improvements through this acquisition. They will focus on improving user experience, including faster moderation times for community posts.
