JAKARTA Meta, the company that oversees Instagram and Facebook, will cut 600 positions from their Artificial Intelligence (AI) division, namely Super Intelligence Labs. This was conveyed on October 23, 2025.

This layoff (PHK) will affect several units. Some of them are the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (FAIR), a unit that focuses on AI products, as well as units that develop the company's AI infrastructure.

The layoff plan was revealed by Axios who managed to get an internal memo from the company. Reportedly, this step was taken to reorganize its AI efforts under Super Intelligence Labs since June.

According to Meta's AI chief, Alexandr Wang, reducing the number of team members will simplify decision making. In addition, this step is expected to increase the responsibilities, scope, and impact of any remaining roles.

Despite the cuts, the newly formed TBD Lab unit will not be affected. The lab consists of dozens of researchers and engineers who focus on developing the basic Meta model for the next generation.

Employees affected by layoffs are encouraged to apply to other positions within Meta. This is an alternative way for employees who do not want to lose their jobs in the company.

This restructuring came shortly after Meta reached a large $27 billion funding deal with Blue Owl Capital on October 22. This deal is the largest private capital agreement Meta has ever made.

Analysts believe that this funding deal will help Meta achieve its huge AI ambitions. This is done by diverting most of the initial costs and risks to external capital while maintaining some of the project's ownership.
