BRIN Develops Voice Recognition Technology And Facial Expressions For Persons With Disabilities

JAKARTA The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing technology that can simplify the ability of people with disabilities. This technology is supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This innovation was developed with a focus on speech recognition and facial expression recognition. Through the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security Research (PRKAKS), this technology is expected to make interaction and communication more natural.

Hilman Ferdinandus Pardede, Principal Expert Researcher for PRKAKS BRIN, explained the function of speech recognition in this technology. This ability is presented to help people with disabilities who have difficulty hearing.

" Voice recognition makes communication more natural and humane. It doesn't need to be touched or seen, just use voice," Hilman said, quoted via the official BRIN website on Monday, October 13.

However, research in the field of speech recognition still faces major challenges, especially in adaptation to various accents. In addition, environmental noise and various user conditions are also issues that need to be addressed.

Hilman emphasized the importance of efficient and resource-efficient innovation so that technology can be accessed more widely. By utilizing AI, Hilman hopes that this technology can be accessed by the wider community, even for users with simple devices.

On the other hand, Gembong Satrio Wibowanto, the Main Expert Engineer for PRKAKS BRIN, highlighted the development of Facial Expression Recognition (FER) technology. He explained that FER can be an alternative means of communication for individuals who have verbal limitations.

"This technology is expected to be able to detect user emotions accurately so that interactions between humans and machines can be more technical and intuitive," said Gembong. This technology is also developed to work in real-time.
