JAKARTA Spotify announced a policy change on its platform to strengthen protection for artists, songwriters and producers. The focus of this protection is Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

The music streaming platform realizes the importance of AI in improving its application experience. However, it is not uncommon for anyone to abuse AI so Spotify seeks to fight harmful action for the music ecosystem.

AI can be used to reduce user experience to divert royalties. To prevent various types of AI-based abuse on its platform, here are new policies that Spotify will implement.

Enforcement Of Identity Evaluation Violations

The main problem that needs to be addressed is the imposition of vocal identity or deepfakes. This scam is easy to do thanks to a generative AI. Although it has long been noticed, Spotify introduced a new identity imitation policy that is firmer against AI voice clones without permission.

Vocal deductions are only permitted if the imitated artist has given permission to use his voice. In addition, Spotify also invests in eradicating impersonation to send music fraudulently to other artist profiles.

Spotify is testing new deterrence tactics with major distributors to stop this attack from the source. They will also increase the resources for the content matching process.

Improved Music Spam Filters

To overcome this, Spotify will launch a new music spam filter this fall. This system will identify uploaders and songs involved in fraudulent tactics. After that, the system will mark the song and stop recommending it.

AI Disclosure In Music Credit

Another problem is the lack of transparency for listeners about the role of AI in the music they listen to. Spotify helps develop new industry standards to disclose AI in music credit through DDEX.

This standard allows artists to clearly show where and how AI plays a role in songmaking, be it vocals, instrumentation, or postproduction. This change is made to increase the confidence of the listeners.
