OpenAI Develops A Age Prediction System Following Allegations Of Youth Suicide

JAKARTA - OpenAI announced new steps to strengthen protection for teens using ChatGPT by building an age prediction system.

In a statement, OpenAI said that it is developing a long-term system that can understand whether users are over or under 18 years of age.

"Remaja grew up with AI, and our job is to ensure ChatGPT adapts to their needs. ChatGPT's response to 15-year-old users should be different from adults," the company wrote.

So, if someone is identified by users under 18 years of age, they will be automatically directed to the ChatGPT experience with age-friendly policies, including blocking explicit sexual content.

In a rare case related to an emergency, OpenAI mentions the possibility of involving law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of users.

In addition, OpenAI ensures that parental control features are available at the end of September 2025. This feature allows parents to link accounts with their teenage children (at least 13 years old), adjust ChatGPT responses according to special juvenile rules, disable certain features, and set usage hours.

Later, parents who activate this feature will also receive a notification if the system detects an emergency condition in their child.

OpenAI emphasized that this step is part of the company's ongoing efforts to improve security for all users, especially teenagers, by involving input from experts, advocates, and policymakers.

"We will continue to share developments in the future. Meanwhile, we would like to thank the partners, advocates, and experts who have provided input and encouraged us to develop," he concluded.

This statement came after previously parents in California demanded ChatGPT on charges the AI company launched a GPT-4o version of ChatGPT without adequate protection, thus encouraging their son to commit suicide.
