JAKARTA OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is setting up a new startup called Merge Labs. This startup will focus on brain-to-computer interface technology such as Elon Musk's Neuralink company.

An anonymous source familiar with the matter told the Financial Times that they were raising funds. The company is also estimated to be worth around US$850 million or around Rp. 13.7 trillion.

The source also stated that the capital would come from the OpenAI venture team. However, this information can still change because OpenAI has not stated its commitment to participate.

To make Merge Labs the leading neurotechnology company, the company will work closely with Alex Blania, the leader of Tools for Humanity. This project was previously known as World, a digital ID provider service to verify humans.

If Merge Labs is successfully built, the company will compete with Neuralink. The company, founded in 2016, is actively developing computer interface chips to be implanted in the brain.

Neuralink has installed brain chip implants into some of its patients as part of the trial. So far, patients with problems such as paralysis have been connected to computers and are able to communicate again with those around them.

The concept of Merge Labs was once written by Altman in 2017, in the same year when Neuralink became known. In his post, Altman mentioned that we will be the first species to design our own descendants and Altman believes that the merging between humans and technology will come true.
