Responding to the results of the Indonesia-US trade agreement regarding the national data rating, cybersecurity observers as well as the Chairman of the CISSReC Cyber Security Research Institute, Pratama Persadha reminded the government to uphold the principles of digital sovereignty.
Pratama said that the state has the right to regulate, protect, and ensure that digital activities, including the management of personal data of its citizens, are under national legal control, namely Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning the Protection of Personal Data.
However, because the PDP Law does not absolutely prohibit the transfer of personal data abroad, Pratama emphasized the importance of the presence of the Personal Data Protection Supervisory Agency (LPPDP), which will be tasked with objectively evaluating whether the destination country meets the established standards.
"Cooperation with the US regarding the flow of data can actually be a positive trigger to accelerate the preparation of Government Regulations (PP PDP), as well as encourage the acceleration of the formation of an independent LPPDP," Pratama said in a statement on Thursday, July 24.

More than that, Pratama also believes that Indonesia needs to draw up a bilateral agreement that guarantees the protection of the rights of Indonesian citizens, including the right to be removed, the right to notification, and the right to sue for privacy violations, even though the data is abroad.
Controlled data management is also directly related to the added value of the digital economy, so Pratama emphasized the importance of the government to ensure that the economic benefits of data can be enjoyed as much as possible by the public and national industry players.
"The personal data and digital behavior of Indonesian citizens are important raw materials for the development of artificial intelligence, algorithm-based services, and technological innovation," he concluded.
