JAKARTA - Coinciding with National Family Day, Google together with experts and educators held a special event, to encourage Indonesian families to be wiser in utilizing technology.

In an event titled #FamiliesCerdasBerinternet, Google emphasized the three main pillars of the company in maintaining child safety, such as protecting from cyber risks, respecting privacy, and empowering children and families for the future.

One example is the SafeSearch feature of content filtering on Google Search which automatically blocks images, videos, and sites containing adult content.

Through this feature, specifically for users under 18 years of age, Google also applies automatic blurs to vulgar content so as not to be seen accidentally.

Even so, Google admits that filtering is not always perfect. Therefore, they encourage all users to provide input through content reports to increase SafeSearch accuracy.

In addition, Google is also encouraging the use of Family Link, an application that helps parents manage their children's digital activities.

With Family Link, parents can do several things, such as monitoring screen time, locking the device remotely, monitoring the child's location, and agreeing to the application used.

"The features like SafeSearch and Family Link are a good first step, but open communication about digital ethics and online consequences remains the main key," said Saskhya Aulia Prima, child psychologist, and founder of the @tigageneration clinic.

Google hopes that technology can become a meaningful learning tool, not just a challenge. With collaboration between family, educators, and providers of digital platforms, a safe and empowering cyberspace future can start from home.

"With the right features and wise approaches, technology can be a meaningful learning tool, not an obstacle," Google said.
