JAKARTA Microsoft stated that Aurora, the basic model based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) they develop, can accurately predict air quality, storms, typhoons, and other phenomena.
This statement is supported by research published in Nature recently. The paper notes that Aurora successfully predicts the landing of Topan Doksuri about four days before the incident, of course with very accurate results.
Aurora predicts the landing of Topan Doksuri in the Philippines, while the Joint Topan Alert Center (PGWT) predicts landing around North Taiwan. This shows that the results of Aurora's observations are much better than official predictions.
Other studies show that Aurora's findings are much better than the National Agency's Center. This is because the AI model is able to estimate tropical cyclone trajectories for five days and outperforms seven cyclone trajectory forecast centers from 2022 to 2023.
"The accuracy of the forecast for the cyclone Aurora trajectory underscores the importance of initial training on large deposits of diverse data," Microsoft said, quoted on Monday, May 26.
This is an interesting finding according to Microsoft. The reason is, this model is trained as a basic model, but can predict weather to predict air pollution after it is refined. The model is also capable of predicting marine waves and tropical cyclones.

Megan Stanley, a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research who is part of the Aurora project, stated that all of this was successfully done thanks to the merger of various data sources. The amount of data used is also not small.
"(So) it produces not only higher accuracy in general, but also means we are better at estimating extreme events," Megan said in a release shared by Microsoft.
The source code and weight of the Aurora model are publicly available. Developers can take advantage of this model by downloading and running their AI model or by building applications that can encourage further innovation.
