JAKARTA - After going through the developer trial phase last month, Google began rolling out the AI-based image editing feature natively in the Gemini app.

This feature allows users to edit images they upload manually as well as images generated by the Gemini app, using only a natural text command. Users can continue to provide editing commands until the results are satisfactory, with contexts that are maintained during the process. Editing can include background changes, object replacements, to the addition of new elements.

Users can also change the image style. In one example, users add a hat to a dog and change the grass background to a beach. Another example is when the user uploads a personal photo and asks Gemini to show what their appearance looks like with a different hair tone.

Once this capability is active (a direct hint will appear in the application), users can start editing images using the currently available AI model.

Another advantage of this feature, which Google calls grading intuitive editing'', is its ability to provide richer and more contextual responses to user requests, which combine text and images in an integrated manner. For example, users can ask Gemini to create an initial draft of the dragon-themed introductory story, complete with the illustration.

In terms of security, Google added that images created or edited using this feature will be equipped with an invisible digital watermark called Synthed. Google is also experimenting with visible watermarks, such as ai marks in the form of capsules in the lower right corner of the image.

Last month at AI Studio, Google showcased Gemini 2.0 Flash capabilities that excel in making images with text, no matter how long, and take advantage of improved world knowledge and reasoning to produce the right images.

This AI image editing feature is starting today on the Gemini app, and will be extended to more users in more than 45 languages and most countries in the next few weeks.
