JAKARTA Google has officially announced that Project Astra's development team is now joining the main team of the Gemini app, marking the shift from just a research prototype to a ready-to-release product this month.
This change was announced internally on Thursday 6 March. Previously, the Astra team was part of the Google DeepMind research division with the mission of creating a universal AI agent that really helps in everyday life. Now, with Astra joining Gemini's first team, development will accelerate.
Astra was first introduced on Google I/O 2024, with further updates at the launch of Gemini 2.0 in December 2024. At that time, Google showcased Astra-based mobile apps and smart glasses for trusted testers.

In addition, Google also announced the appointment of Chris Struhar as Vice President of Products for the Gemini application. Struhar, who previously served as VP of Product for Creators in Meta, has a strong track record in product development. He will now report to Sissie airing, VP and General Manager Gemini.
