Instagram Has A Feature To Filter DM Messages From Hate Speech

JAKARTA - Instagram presents a new feature that allows users to filter message requests or direct messages (DM) from hate speech. This feature has begun to be tested for influencers and public figures.

"Because DM is a place for private conversation, we will proactively eradicate speech that triggers hate speech or oppression in the same way we did before in the comments column," VOI quoted from the Instagram blog, Friday, April 23.

Launching The Verge, this new feature will automatically filter the content of messages received by users from words that are satirical or offensive. Includes emoji messages indicating abusive content.

This DM filter can be activated via a new panel in the Instagram application called 'hidden words'. To activate this filter, you can open the Settings menu, then Privacy and Hidden Words, then tap the available toggle.

"If users open one of the messages that have been filtered and enter into a separate folder, they can read its contents, delete, or report the message," wrote Instagram.

Previously, Instagram allowed anyone to send and receive DMs, without having to follow them first. But now, the Direct Message feature can only be accessed if the recipient of the message allows other people to send their DM.

Prevent Cyber Bulliying

The application under the auspices of Facebook has also collaborated with anti-discrimination and anti-bulliying organizations. This is done to reduce bullying on the internet, especially on social media platforms.

Instagram said the new feature would be rolled out to several countries in the next few weeks, but they did not specify which countries that were. In the next few months, this feature will be rolling out to more countries.

"We (Instagram) will continue to work with experts, communities, teenagers, creators, and public figures to understand their experiences on Instagram and become our reference in developing policies to protect them from online abuse," wrote Instagram.
