JAKARTA - Meta is reportedly planning the construction of an artificial intelligence (AI) data center with a fantastic investment value of US$200 billion (Rp3,274 trillion). This figure is almost equivalent to New Zealand's GDP, making it one of the largest technology infrastructure investments in history. The move shows that Meta is betting big on AI's future and wants to compete with OpenAI and Google in this tech race.

According to a report from The Information, Meta is considering several potential locations for the construction of these data centers, including Louisiana, Wyoming, and Texas. This magnitude of investment indicates that Meta believes demand for AI will skyrocket in the next few years.

Over the past few years, Meta has integrated AI into its various products. Meta AI, for example, is an AI-based digital assistant that competes directly with Google Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT. In addition, Meta has also developed a variety of AI-based tools, including image editing features, image generation, and background generation available on Instagram.

Meta's move could be seen as a strategy to secure a position in the AI revolution, especially given the trend of social media use could experience significant changes in the future. The company led by Mark Zuckerberg doesn't seem to want to just be a player, but instead wants to lead the AI revolution with a stronger infrastructure.

Although the amount of 200 billion US dollars sounds very large, Meta is not the only company that poured large funds into AI. In fact, some of its competitors have much larger investment plans.

One of the most ambitious is OpenAI's Stargate project, which involves developing a new AI data center in the next four years with a total investment of 500 billion US dollars (Rp. 8,185 trillion). This project is an OpenAI collaboration with various major companies, including SoftBank.

Meanwhile, the European Union has also announced a 200 billion euro investment plan (IDR 3,439.5 trillion) to support AI development on the continent.

On the other hand, two other technology giants also don't want to be left behind:

Microsoft plans to invest 80 billion US dollars (IDR 1,375.8 trillion) in AI development in the 2025 fiscal year. Amazon has also allocated larger funds than in 2024, at which time it has spent around 75 billion US dollars (IDR 1,289.8 trillion) for AI and other technology infrastructure.

Meta Denies

Although this report has attracted attention, Meta has denied the claim. In its official statement, a Meta spokesperson said: "We have clearly disclosed the plans of our data center as well as planned capital expenditures. Everything beyond that is just pure speculation."

However, many suspect that Meta just wants to hide its big plans and doesn't want to disclose this information to the public. However, with the growing AI trend, this Meta move seems to be just a matter of time before it is officially announced.

This condition shows Meta's ambition to dominate the AI industry with data center investment worth 200 billion US dollars. While still considered speculative, this move makes it clear that AI is a crucial element in Meta's long-term strategy. With the increasingly fierce competition between Meta, OpenAI, Google, and other technology companies, we will soon see who will truly lead the AI revolution in the future.
