JAKARTA Chinese tech giant Alibaba announced that it will release an open-source version of its video and image maker (AI) artificial intelligence model, Wan 2.1. This announcement was made via uploads on platform X on Tuesday.
An Alibaba spokesman stated that complete details of the model would be delivered in a video recording at 23.00 Beijing time (15.00 GMT).
Alibaba's move comes amid rising competition in China's AI market, especially after DeepSek launched its newest open-source model last month. The model rocked the global AI industry with its claimed performance on par with products from large companies like OpenAI, which instead began to shift to closed models.
AI capacities Wan 2.1 and QwQ-Max
Alibaba first introduced this video and image-making AI model in January 2025, before later changing its name from Wanx to Wan. The company highlights the ability of this model to produce very realistic visuals.
In a previous statement, Alibaba also claimed that Wan 2.1 was at the top of VBench, a leaderboard for a video-generative model, with advantages in various aspects such as multi-object interactions.

Alibaba's Big Investment In AI
Not only developing the AI model, Alibaba also plans to invest at least 380 billion yuan (around Rp812 trillion) in the next three years to strengthen cloud computing infrastructure and their artificial intelligence.
With this aggressive move, Alibaba further emphasizes its position in AI's global competition, especially in dealing with the dominance of Western companies such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
