Remaining Independent, Discord Rejects Microsoft's Proposal

JAKARTA - Discord ended the acquisition agreement with Microsoft. The chat application refuses a dowry of 10 billion US dollars, equivalent to Rp144 trillion from Microsoft.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the acquisition talks are not going well. Discord decided to remain independent, as an alternative voice chat platform for gamers.

Not only Microsoft, the online chat application has also rejected proposals from Amazon and Epic Games. As a standalone platform, Discord is also considering taking the floor on the stock exchange or Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Given that during the new funding round in December 2020, Discord Inc was already worth US $ 7 billion. This also makes Microsoft's offer well above the market value of the platform, even over the 8.5 billion it paid for Skype in 2011.

Quoted by The Verge, Microsoft really wants to replace the Xbox Game Chat feature with the Discord platform. However, it is not known what Discord will gain from its long-term deal with Microsoft.

As of December 2020, Discord has more than 140 million active users on all gaming platforms globally. This number will continue to grow rapidly as cross-platform games emerge.
