JAKARTA - During the Microsoft Ignite 2024 event, the tech giant introduced Super Resolution (SR) support for Teams. The feature is now available in public previews and will be released globally in March.

Initially, this feature was introduced for Snapdragon X-based Copilot+ PCs, which aim to improve video quality, especially in less stable network conditions.

Network conditions can be a challenge in high traffic Teams meetings. Bandwidth limitations often lead to low-resolution video shipments, which have an impact on declining display quality," wrote Naba Kumar, Microsoft's Principal Product Manager on his blog.

Super Resolution is supported by artificial intelligence (AI) technology, thereby increasing video resolution, resulting in much sharper and clearer image quality.

Microsoft also claims to have assessed the quality of subjective videos, where users evaluate video calls with activated SRs.

In this test, Microsoft made a Teams call for two participants with a low-resolution incoming video (360p). However, there was a significant difference in quality before and after the Super Resolution was activated.

To optimize power consumption, Super Resolution will be enabled by default when the device is plugped in, but when the feature is not plugped in, it will automatically turn off, so it can extend the battery life.

However, if desired, users can turn off this feature themselves. To enable Public Preview, click the three-dot menu in navigation over Teams, then go to Settings > About Teams > Initial Access and check the box for Public Preview.
