JAKARTA - An Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup from China, DeepSeek is becoming a hot topic of conversation, because it has successfully launched a sophisticated AI chatbot that is claimed to be able to compete with the ChatGPT capabilities of OpenAI and Meta's Llama.

However, one of the most prominent aspects of DeepSek compared to other models is its development which is much more efficient than other AI models, but has capabilities that are equivalent to or more to the GPT-4 model.

In just two months, with a budget of around 6 million US dollars (Rp97 billion), DeepSekhas succeeded in developing two AI models, namely DeepSek-V3 and DeepSek-R1.

This figure is very far when compared to the costs spent by OpenAI in the development of ChatGPT-4 which reached 63 million US dollars (Rp 1 trillion), according to a TeamGPT report.

Seeing this phenomenon, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of East Venture, Andrian Kurniady revealed that there are two factors that may be the reason why the cost of developing the AI DeepSeek model is much cheaper.

According to Andrian, DeepSeek does not use new techniques in the development of its AI model. Instead, they only combine existing techniques to create sophisticated AI models.

"The engineer is also sophisticated, so he is able to combine techniques that are already in such a way that they can create more sophisticated models," Andrian said in a discussion panel entitled How DeepSek changes opportunities in Indonesia's Al landscape on Wednesday, February 5.

"So if we read the background, nothing new. So the combination of person A is like this, person B is like this, combined," he added.

He also added that what DeepSek did was arguably unique and not unique. Because according to him, many researchers out there have done the same thing.

"If we want to hear the conversation from the researchers out there who are not involved in Meta or OpenAI, they have carried out these techniques in order to produce models at cheaper prices, maybe student prices," he said.
