JAKARTA Autonomous tech startup Avride announced its partnership with food delivery company Grubhub to deliver food delivery robots on campuses across the United States, on January 17.

Since the pandemic, many companies and universities have started testing the use of introductory robots to address labor shortages, reduce operational costs, and reduce dependence on motorized vehicles in food delivery.

Avride has operated its first 100 robotic units at Ohio State University and plans to introduce the latest models on the campus. The university has also fully switched to robotic-based delivery services from several startups, including Cartken.

"The campus area is an ideal environment to implement automation in delivery services. A relatively small space with high order density makes robots the best solution," said Avride CEO Dmitry Polishchuk, quoted by VOI from Reuters.

Polishchuk added that demand for food delivery robots on US campuses continues to increase. Several companies such as Avride and Serve Robotics have entered into partnerships with ride-hailing and shipping companies to accelerate the commercialization of this technology.

In October 2024, Avride also announced cooperation with Uber for food delivery services and robotics.

Avride, based in Austin, Texas, has completed 200,000 shipments in five countries since its founding in 2017. The startup was previously part of the Russian company's autonomous vehicle division, Yandex, before breaking up last year due to the company's restructuring.

With this expansion, Avride further strengthened its role in the robot-based food delivery revolution in the United States.
