Australia Encourages Wider Internet Choices Amid Google's Dominance And Generative AI Development

JAKARTA Australia's business competition supervisory agency, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), expressed the need for new efforts to ensure wider choices for internet users. This statement comes amid Google's dominance in the search engine market and the failure of its competitors to take advantage of the momentum of the development of artificial intelligence (AI) generative.

In a recent report, the ACC revealed that the integration of a generating AI device to a search engine is still in its early stages. However, the financial capabilities and dominance of big tech companies such as Google and Microsoft provide them with significant advantages.

ACCC commissioner Peter Crone said that the use of a generating AI in search engines can provide a more efficient experience for some users. However, this also raises concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of responses generated by AI.

"Some consumers may feel the AI-based search experience is more useful and efficient, but others may doubt the accuracy and reliability of AI responses," Crone said.

Google and Microsoft have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding this report.

Australia, known to tighten regulations against tech companies, was previously the first country to require social media platforms to pay royalties to the media for the content they share. Last month, the country banned the use of social media for children under the age of 16, and last week proposed legislation allowing fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (approximately IDR 500 billion) for tech companies that suppress competition and prevent consumers from switching to other services.

The ACCC also encourages the implementation of service specific codes to prevent anti-competitive behavior, overcome data excellence, and make it easier for consumers to change services. The government has approved these measures in principle, and the ACCC will complete its investigation in March.
