JAKARTA - Apple will use an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen for all iPhone models sold from 2025 onwards. They will completely abandon the use of liquid crystal displays (LCD), as reported by the Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, on Tuesday, September 3 citing unnamed sources.

Television and smartphone manufacturers are increasingly adopting OLED screens over LCD as OLED's ability to display liver colors and sharper contrasts, which are ideal for high-definition videos.

The move will exclude Sharp Corp and Japan Display from Apple's mobile business, according to a Nikkei report. Apple has started ordering OLED screens for the upcoming iPhone SE models from BOE Technology China and South Korea's LG Display.

Sharp and Japan Display, which about a decade ago had a combined share of 70% of the iPhone screen, recently only supplied LCD for the iPhone SE and did not mass-produce OLED screens for smartphones, the report added.

Apple first used an OLED panel on the iPhone X launched in 2017 and has since switched to OLED for premium iPhone models. The company has also brought the OLED screen to the latest generation iPad Pro model launched in May.

Sharp, Japan Display, and LG Display declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. Apple also has not responded to requests for comment.
