Google Agrees To Solve Data Collection Case From Incognito Mode In Chrome

JAKARTA After resolving antitrust cases with Epic Games and dozens of states in the United States, nowGoogledecided to resolve cases of incognito mode.

Incognite mode is a pseudonym feature in Chrome to hide all browsing activities and history. In 2020, Google was accused of tracking and collecting data on people who used the pseudonym mode.

Through a class action lawsuit, Google is considered to have violated the telephone wiretapping law for using Google Analytics or Ad Manager to collect data from incognito modes. In fact, the function of incognito mode is to keep user activity a secret.

Initially, Google denied the allegations and issued a motion that it was always warning in incognito mode. The warning shows that user activity is still visible on websites visited, but this motion was rejected by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

"Because Google has never explicitly told users that they did this, the Court cannot legally decide that users explicitly approved the disputed data collection," Rogers said, quoted by VOI fromArstechnica.

After the case lasted more than three years, Google finally stopped defending itself. They will not continue the case in court and decide to sign a case settlement agreement.

Although Google and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the case, the provisions for the settlement of the case have not been published. The agreement will be submitted to the court in late January and the court will grant approval at the end of February.
