JAKARTA - Google has just announced that it will no longer support its older Operating System (OS), Android 4.4 KitKat.

The rules came into effect in August 2023. Android KitKat was launched in October 2013, and will begin to lose its support before its 10th birthday.

"The Android KitKat (KK) platform was first released ~10 years ago and since then, we have introduced many innovative upgrades and features for Android, which are not available at the KK," Google said in its announcement, quoted Tuesday, July 25.

However, the company says the number of active devices on Android KitKat continues to decline, even this month it is below one percent globally. That percentage seems low enough for Google to finally give up.

"Starting July 2023, the number of active devices in the KK is below 1% because more and more users are updating to the latest Android version," explained Google.

Therefore, Google will no longer support Android KitKat in the release of the upcoming Google Play service. The device running the OS will no longer receive the Play Service APK version after 23.30.99.

Google was last known to end support for an old version of Android like Jelly Bean in 2021. The OS was launched in 2012 a year before KitKat. Similar to the KitKat case, the active device at Jelly Bean also fell below one percent before support was discontinued.
