JAKARTA - Starting in the first quarter of 2024, third-party cookies will no longer be fully used for Google Chrome browser users.

Google plans to migrate one percent of Chrome users to Privacy Sandbox and disable third-party cookies for them.

And, fully disabled in the second half of 2024. Privacy Sandbox aims to replace third-party cookies with a more privacy-aware approach.

Users can manage their interests and group them into groups based on similar tracing patterns. While the API's relevance and measurement of Privacy Sandbox will also be available to all Chrome users in July.

Developers can use the API to carry out scalable live traffic testing, as they prepare to operate without third-party cookies.

"Before the third-party cookies stop, we don't plan to make any significant changes to the API interface," Google's Vice President Sandbox, Anthony Chavez, said on the company's official blog, quoted Monday, May 22.

"Companies that have not done so must evaluate the integration of these APIs into their products as they plan to transition to more private solutions," he added.

To prepare a third-party web without cookies, Chavez explained in Q4 2023, Google will introduce developer capabilities in order to simulate Chrome third-party cookies stopping, for a reconfigurable user percentage.

"This will activate the developer-controlled testing that can take advantage of the level of traffic without higher third-party cookies," Chavez said.

Chavez insists that this plan has been developed by consulting with the UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA), in accordance with Google's commitments and timelines.

"We will continue to handle comments made by CMA, as we prepare to stop third-party cookies exceeding one percent of Chrome users after CMA completes its assessment," Chavez said.
