JAKARTA - Google Doodle today celebrates Prof.'s 108th birthday. Dr. Julie Sulianti Saroso, who was one of the first female doctors in Indonesia and illustrated by guest artist Lenny.
Born on May 10, 1917 in Karangasem, Bali, Sulianti Saroso dedicated her life to helping vulnerable people access quality health services.
Prof. Saroso's interest in the medical world at a young age is none other than coming from his own father, who is also a doctor.
He graduated with a medical degree from the Geneeskundige Hoge School in 1942, then continued his education in Europe and the United States, where he earned several further titles in public health.
Doctor Saroso also received scholarships from the World Health Organization (WHO) to study the health system of mothers and children throughout Europe.
Furthermore, in 1952, he returned to Indonesia, and helped bring family planning education to his homeland. Before long, he joined the Ministry of Health to lead a program that increased access to health for women, children and villagers.
After a long and successful career in the field of public health, in 1969 doctor Saroso began teaching at Airlangga University, and helped train the next generation of doctors and health workers.
She later became the second female President of the World Health Council and served in several prominent organizations, including the World Health Organization's Mother and Child Expert Committee, the UN Community Development Commission in African Countries, and the Indonesian National Women's Commission.
