JAKARTA - The use of artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT, the chatbot used to make school assignments and some schools ban their use, is now increasingly widespread among students through the Chegg Inc company.

The education software maker from the United States has combined their quizze answer corpus with a ChatGPT artificial intelligence model known as GPT-4 to create CheggMate, a learning aid tailored to students.

"It's like having a tutor in your hand," Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig told Reuters last week, before announcing CheggMate on Monday, April 17.

According to Rosensweig, this software will adapt to students by processing data on the subjects they take and the exam questions they miss, as well as providing personal training and learning guidelines, according to student needs, things that public programs like ChatGPT cannot do. CheggMate will be available for free next month for the start, Chegg said.

This launch has the potential to expand the use of artificial intelligence by students, while educators are facing the consequences of using this technology. Last year's ChatGPT launch led students to collect tasks clearly written by the chatbot, allowing some students to avoid their course work and force the faculty to check the integrity of the task.

Los Angeles Unified School district has blocked access to ChatGPT on its devices and networks, as reported to Reuters, while institutions such as Sciences Po in France banned its use for fear of plagiarism. However, several other teachers have encouraged the use of ChatGPT if disclosed, for the purpose of criticism.

Rosensweig says Chegg focuses on mathematics and science, not on essay writing that is of concern to schools. CheggMate also allows teachers to limit reviews of questions only on current exams.

Accuracy remains a problem for artificial intelligence models, which predict what to say next without understanding of the facts. Rosensweig said Chegg had arranged and checked their answers to ensure accuracy.

Asked if the use of artificial intelligence would make Chegg reduce the number of content contributor experts to 150,000, he said the company had reached a balance between humans and technology. "CheggMate is likely to reduce content costs and increase profitability over time," he said.

Analysis in recent months suggested whether Chegg could increase its customer base by 8 million amid the free popularity of ChatGPT software, created by OpenAI startups. Chegg shares fell 28% this year until Friday, making its market cap about 2.3 billion US dollars (Rp34.2 trillion).

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a press release on Monday that his Startup was enthusiastic about partnering with Chegg to "enhancing the way people around the world learn."

Rosensweig, CEO of Chegg, said Proprietary Chegg's data shows its relevance. "That's why They're working with Us," he said.
