JAKARTA - Meta will launch its first Augmented Reality (AR) glasses in 2027. The Reality Labs Division shared an updated company roadmap with its employees this week.

The roadmap, reported by The Verge, will launch several AR and Virtual Reality (VR) products within the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2027 periods.

Some VR-related products are in the process in Meta HQ. The first is the VR Quest 3 headset that appeared later this year, and will appear to be twice as thin, twice as powerful, and slightly more expensive than the Meta Quest 2.

The company is also planning a headset that is more accessible, aka cheaper, with the code name Ventura for next year.

After that, the company will then introduce a sophisticated headset under the code name La Jolla, which features a photorealistic Codec Avatar.

Back in 2021, under a partnership with Luxottica, Meta released AR Ray-Ban smart glasses that integrate technology for phone calls, photos, videos, and music.

The tech giant will release the next two generations of glasses in the fall of 2023 and 2025.

In 2025, the company will also reportedly launch third-generation smart glasses with a viewfinder display to view incoming text, scan QR codes, and translate text from other languages in real time.

The glasses will be released simultaneously with a neural interface band where users can control them through hand movements. In addition, Meta is also rumored to be developing smartwatches that will work with smart glasses.

Finally, Meta is considering revealing a set of long-formed AR glasses, with the codename Orion covering the avatar hologram to the real world. The AR glasses will be tested first for employees in 2024 and launched to the public after 2027.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg once put forward a bold prediction that AR glasses will be a natural substitute for smartphones, which could make 2027 an important year for companies struggling if true, quoted from Trusted Review, Thursday, March 2.

The leaked Meta roadmap paints an overview of Meta being unaffected by massive investments over the years in VR hardware and little gain in return.

Apple is also preparing to enter the long-awaited mixed reality market for about a year. Seeing this, Meta really needs to take advantage of its advantage in the market.
