FBI Computer Systems Containing Sexual Harassment Materials Children Try To Hack

JAKARTA - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed they are investigating the malicious cyber activity contained in its own network.

According to a CNN International report, quoted on Saturday, February 18, from an unnamed source briefed on the matter, the United States agency recently investigated and attempted to contain alleged hacking attempts.

The intruder targeted the computer system used to investigate Child Sexual Harassment Material (CSAM). The incident involved a field office in New York. Currently, investigators are said to be still investigating the origin of the violation.

FBI spokesman Manali Basu confirmed it had withheld a separate incident that was being investigated. "The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to obtain additional information," Basu told TechCrunch.

This is an isolated incident that has been resolved. Since this is an ongoing investigation, the FBI has no further comment to comment on at this time," he added.

Not much has been revealed from the incident, such as when an intrusion occurred, how the FBI was compromised and it appears it has not been claimed by any major cybercriminal organization.

This is not the first time an FBI computer has been compromised. Back in 2021, another hacker broke into an FBI email portal and used it to send fake cyberattack warning spams to about 100,000 inboxes.

The portal acts as a way for the FBI to share cyber threats with state and local law enforcers. However, the incident forced the FBI to shut down the system until it could eradicate the problem.
