JAKARTA - German Digital and Transportation Minister Volker Wissing recently reportedly met Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Germany wants Twitter to be able to participate in fighting disinformation.
Confirmed by a spokesman for the German Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, the meeting expected Twitter to voluntarily comply with its commitment to combat disinformation.
As well as complying with the future Digital Service Act (DSA), which was approved by 27 EU member states and lawmakers in April 2022, requires online platforms to monitor the internet more on illegal content.
As a result, Musk assured Wissing Twitter would not back down from the disinformation fight. It is known, DSA was implemented in November last year, designed to ensure the online environment remains a safe place, while maintaining freedom of expression.
DSA targets major social networks to comply, where they will have greater responsibility to protect users from risks such as harmful disinformation.
Twitter and other huge online platforms have until mid-June 2023 to fully comply with the law.
However, a spokesman for the Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transformation of Germany stressed that the agreement with Musk should really be obeyed based on DSA, and without exception.
"With the Digital Services Act, we have set clear rules at the EU level to take action against illegal content, increase disinformation, and bots on social networks," the ministry spokesman told ArsTechnica, Saturday, January 7.
"Companies are responsible here so users can safely use the network," he added.
Over the next few months, the German government will continue to monitor Twitter. For information, Musk has in recent months been under constant criticism for his personal use of Twitter, by tweeting conspiracy theories from his account, as well as the official decisions he has made as CEO of Twitter, such as removing the COVID-19 misinformation policy.
