JAKARTA - Tumblr added support for livestreaming via video platform Livebox. This feature is being launched for US users on iOS and Android, and will soon be released for global users and desktop sites. Further details are outlined in the Tumblr blog post, which dubbed the service as Tumblr Live.
Tumblr has supported streaming in the past, but did so by allowing people to share streaming from other services such as YouNow and YouTube. This new option is described as the original Tumblr streaming service supported by Livebox.
Livebox is operated by Meet Group, a subsidiary of dating app company Parship Meet Group. Livebox allows users to tip streamers, and in the same way, Tumblr will allow you to pay content creators in virtual currencies called "Diamonds".
According to its press release, Livebox provides AI and human moderation for streaming. In addition, the service also allows streamers to appoint trusted audiences as moderators. The streaming service has so far only been supported for the main Tumblr blog, not any side blog under the same account.
The new feature comes as the owner of Tumblr, Automatic, is trying to revitalize the blogging platform he bought from Verizon in 2019. Tumblr has benefited from recent chaos on Twitter, emerging as a potential alternative to the chaotic policy the new owner Elon Musk has made.
The streaming feature is unlikely to overtake Twitch or YouTube, but adds other media - and a new way to make money, for the artist community.
