JAKARTA - Just as young as corn, Rivian Automotive Inc., is rumored to be ending its joint venture with Mercedes-Benz which focuses on building electric vans in Europe.
In a statement on Monday, December 12, the original automaker said it would focus on its consumers and commercial businesses in the United States (US).
"The cessation of this partnership reflects our process of continuing to evaluate our main capital project, while considering our current and future economic conditions," Rivian Chief Financial Officer Claire McDonough said in a statement.
In September, Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to produce electric vans at a factory in Poland, Hungary, or Romania in the next few years.
The deal announced by the company on Thursday, September 8 aims to allow the two companies to work together in producing electric vans.
The two car brands also intend to set up new joint venture companies in Europe to produce large electric vans for both Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian in the coming years.
Unfortunately this joint venture had to be stopped by Rivian. However, plans for a new electric vehicle manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Vans in Jawor, Poland were not affected.
Mathias Geisen, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans also added that this situation will not affect the speed of the company's future electrification strategy.
