JAKARTA - A sperm whale died slowly and painfully on Nova Scotia beach earlier this month after swallowing 330 pounds of garbage lodged in its stomach. The whale was found on a rocky beach on Craigmore, near Judique in Cape Breton, Canada.

The 45-foot-long male whale looked dry when it landed on November 4, and although the team worked to save the whale, he died the next day.

The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative conducted an autopsy as soon as the whale died and found fishing nets, ropes, gloves, and various items made of plastic in its stomach.

The Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) recently shared the incident, which said the whale's death was a 'clear recall' of how serious human waste problems are littering the oceans on Planet Earth.

The average adult sperm whale weighs between 35 and 45 tonnes, but today's male whales weigh no more than 30 tonnes because of the garbage that blocks their ability to eat.

"Seeing sperm whales so close to the beach and so thin are some very concerning signs," Tonya Wimmer of MARS told CTV News.

Wimmer says it's because of the way sperm whales eat, it's very common to find plastic in their stomachs, but the denser clumps in males are more numerous than he's ever seen in the past.

This large amount of garbage prevents the animal from eating food, which eventually causes it to die from hunger

"It will be terrible and traumatic for these animals to die slowly," Wimmer said.

This male whale is just one of many sperm whales found with plastic waste in its stomach.

Another sperm whale was stranded on Northumberland beach in 2019 and a post-mortem examination revealed plastic in its stomach.

Dead Whales in Indonesia

Then there was one in 2018, which was stranded in eastern Indonesia and had a 13-pound plastic waste clot in its stomach.

According to Wakatobi National Park Head Heri Santoso, the rescue team found a 31-foot-long male sperm whale carcass rotting near the waters of Kapota in Southeast Sulawesi province.

The waste in his stomach includes 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, two flip-flops, one nylon sack and more than 1,000 other pieces of plastic.

The cause of death is unknown, and the carcass will be buried immediately without an autopsy because his condition is rotten.

A more recent study, released earlier this month, announced that bale whales - blue whales, licensing, and fins - eat up to 10 million pieces of microplastic every day.

Blue whales swallow the most, as they almost exclusively eat shrimp-like animals calledES.

"They are lower in the food chain than you might expect with a large size, which puts them closer to where the plastic is in the water," said study co-author Dr Matthew Savoca. There is only one link: The whale ate plastic, then the whale ate the dog.

Election whales are expected to have a very high risk of swallowing microplastics. This is due to the behavior of their diet filters, the large volume of prey they eat, and the fact that they usually live in polluted areas, such as California Current.

However, their daily plastic consumption data is still lacking and limits our understanding of the risks, health effects, and how the impact can be mitigated.
