The Official Wickr Meme Messaging App Is CLOSEd Next Year, This Is The Cause

JAKARTA - Since being officially acquired by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2021, Wickr has listened carefully to input from its users to bring end-to-end encryption. Until the final decision, the company decided to stop Wickr Me services.

Wickr Me is a private messaging service developed by Wickr Inc. since 2014. The company says the reason behind closing this platform is because it wants to focus on data security and user communication.

"Since AWS acquired Wickr in 2021, we have listened closely to our customers to better understand their need for end-to-end encryption. After careful consideration, we will focus Wickr on securing the data and communications of our business and public sector customers with AWS Wickr and Wickr Enterprise, and have decided to stop our consumer product, Wickr Me," the company wrote on its blog, which was discovered by The Verge.

With this closure, Wickr will no longer accept user registration for Wickr Me after December 31, 2022, and will begin stopping Wickr Me the following year, December 31, 2023.

"We understand the need for our customers to maintain secure communication for sensitive information, and we are working with customers to meet their needs with the AWS Wickr," the company explained.

AWS Wickr is an end-to-end encrypted company communication service that allows organizations to communicate more safely, while supporting data storage obligations.

AWS Wickr helps business customers and the public sector address growing threats and regulations by combining security and administrative features designed to protect sensitive communications, enforce information governance policies, and store data as needed.

Therefore, the company added that it is working to develop the capabilities of Wickr customers to communicate safely with individuals outside of their organization.

According to Engadget, the announcement comes following a report saying that Amazon is not doing much to combat the problem of people using Wickr Me exchanging child sexual abuse material.

Prior to its close next year, AWS Wickr promised to provide more information in the coming months about the actions you can take to store your data.
