JAKARTA - Tesla announced that it will open an electric vehicle connector design which is expected to become a new standard in EV charging in North America.

"With more than a decade of use and 20 billion EV miles charging as the name suggests, Tesla's charging connectors are the most proven in North America, offering AC charging and charging up to 1 MW DC in one lean package," Elon Musk's company wrote in a statement shared on Twitter.

Citing Electrek, this decision came after a petition by Aptera for Tesla's payload connector to replace the Combined Charging System (CCS) as a new standard for electric vehicles in North America in early 2022.

"In pursuing our mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, today we opened our EV connector design to the world," the electric car manufacturer said.

To that end, Tesla invites charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to install Tesla charging connectors and charging ports, now called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), on their equipment and vehicles.

Tesla said NACS would be North America's most common charging standard with a Tesla Supercharging network post 60% more than any combined CCS-enhanced network.

"Network operators already have plans to get NACS into their chargers, so Tesla owners can hope to charge on other networks without a adapter," he added.

That way, Tesla is looking forward to future electric vehicles combining NACS designs and charging on Tesla North America's Supercharging and Destination Charging networks.

"As a purely electrical and mechanical interface agnostic for cases of use and communication protocols, NACS is easy to adopt. Design files and specifications are available for download, and we are working actively with relevant standard bodies to compile Tesla's charging connectors as a public standard," Tesla concluded.
