JAKARTA - The smartphone chipmaker from Taiwan, MediaTek Inc, on Tuesday, November 8 launched a new chip called Dimensity 9200 which appears to be capturing more premium markets.

The company says the 5G chip was made at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's using a second-generation 4-nanometer chip production technology, which refers to the transistor size. Generally, the smaller the transistor, the more efficient the chip will be.

Phil Solis, smartphone chip analyst at IDC, said the new chip is key to MediaTek's strategy to move upstream.

"This product will help MediaTek thrive in the US and European markets and help change consumer perceptions of MediaTek," Solis told Reuters.

The premium Android smartphone has been dominated by US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc, which also supplies modem chips to Apple's iPhone for its connectivity. While MediaTek has a large portion of the market for cheap Android phones, the chip is sold much cheaper than chips for premium phones.

"MediaTek is far behind Qualcomm in terms of revenue, and that's what MediaTek is trying to change," said Solis.

MediaTek says the power efficiency of new chips helps achieve longer battery life and creates a better gaming experience on smartphones.
