Many Features Not Working In Safari Browser, Telegram CEO Hopes Apple Makes Changes

JAKARTA - Telegram has accompanied its users for almost nine years. Apart from working well on mobile, Telegram Web also provides a great experience on Desktop.

However, in reality the features that Telegram provides cannot be enjoyed by iOS users, because it is prevented by Apple's policy of restricting web developers on its iPhone and iPad.

In a message on Telegram, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said there is a bullet list of issues that Telegram Web developers found in the iOS Safari browser that Apple has not fixed, as for the following issues:

No push notifications available. Safari automatically scrolls the page after tapping a text field, Apple completely ignores the interface layout. Safari sometimes refreshes pages randomly automatically and annoys users Video stickers (WebM) not supported No Opus support. Opus is an audio file format used by all Telegram mobile and desktop apps for voice messages. Visual artifacts that arise because Safari fails to handle complex animations, and more.

"We suspect that Apple may be intentionally disabling its web apps to force users to download more native apps for which Apple may charge a 30 percent commission," Durov said.

Fortunately, regulators are starting to realize what's going on. This week, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the UK regulator, said that Apple's ban was feared to limit the potential of the Safari browser, and also limit Apple's incentives to invest in its browser engine.

These restrictions also seriously impede the ability of web applications to run in browsers rather than having to be downloaded individually, depriving consumers and businesses of the full benefits of this innovative technology.

With the regulations made, Durov hopes that there will be actions and changes on the part of Apple.

"It is sad that, more than ten years after the death of Steve Jobs, a company that once revolutionized the mobile web has turned into the most significant roadblock."
