JAKARTA - Twitter Inc estimated in a filing on Monday, May 2 that fake or spam accounts represented less than 5% of monetizable daily active users during the first quarter.

The social media company said it currently had 229 million ad-served users in the first quarter.

The revelations come days after Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk, who has signed a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, tweeted that one of his priorities was removing "spam bots" from the platform.

Twitter said in the filing it faces several risks until the deal with Musk closes, such as whether advertisers will continue to spend money on Twitter and "potential uncertainty regarding our future plans and strategies."

Twitter itself had received accusations of exaggerating the number of users on the platform. But in the end the company admitted the mistake. They say the error is from how to count multiple active accounts when they are all tied to a single user.
