Netflix Sharpens User's Movie Recommendations With New Two Thumbs Up Feature

JAKARTA - Streaming giant Netflix has just launched its Two Thumbs Up feature, which is a way to double the enthusiasm of users for the TV shows or movies they love.

Currently, the basic thumbs up and thumbs down options indicate users only want to see similar content or send it to the trash.

Like it or not. Netflix adjusts its user recommendations based on these ratings, viewing history, and how and when to watch.

But now, when a user clicks on the Two Thumbs Up button, the user will express a like for a particular title on the platform, and Netflix will sharpen its recommendation system for that user, thereby making it more accurate.

"Our thumbs up and thumbs down button right now is a great way for you to let us know how you feel about the series or film, and in return, you get a profile that's more tailored to your tastes," Netflix said in a statement. Trends, Tuesday, April 12.

“However, we have learned over time that these feelings can go beyond simple likes or dislikes. Providing an additional way to let us know when you really like something means a profile with recommendations that better reflect what you enjoy."

The way this feature works is quite easy, for example, if the user likes the film Bridgerton, the user may see more shows or films starring the cast or from Shondaland, the production company that made it.

The new Two Thumbs Up feature is now available on Netflix TV and the web, as well as on Android and iOS mobile devices. Netflix ditched its five-star rating system in 2017 and turned it into a more simplified thumbs-up signal for liking or disliking.

In addition to the personal preferences that users choose when they first set up a profile, thumb ratings help fine-tune which titles best reflect their tastes.

The platform's algorithm also takes into account the overall popularity of a particular title when suggesting the user's next favorite movie. With these additional features, users can try to take their customization power to the next level.
