JAKARTA - Internet service provider company from the US, Cogent Communications, announced that it has cut internet services for their Russian clients. The announcement was made in person by Cogent's CEO, David Schaeffer, said Friday, March 4.

Schaeffer said several Russian clients had requested extensions of internet services and Cogent was trying to accommodate them.

Cogent, based in Washington, is part of a network that allows data to flow through the internet. "This is Russia's second largest carrier," said Schaeffe, as quoted by Reuters.

A long list of companies from every line have stopped doing business with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, which has killed hundreds of people and sent more than 1 million refugees to neighboring countries.

Schaeffer said Cogent took this step, not least because the company did not want some of its capabilities and facilities to be used for "cyber attacks or disinformation."

But the company is also concerned about the implications of losing access to the wide range of information that the internet provides Russians. "It was a difficult decision," he said.
