JAKARTA - TikTok has again stolen the YouTube market by extending the maximum time limit for videos on the platform from three minutes to 10 minutes.

This change follows a few months after testing, this new duration is already rolling out to all content creators on the platform.

Since the app launched in 2017, TikTok initially only allowed videos up to 15 seconds long before increasing it to one minute. In July 2021, the limit was increased to three minutes before changing it again this week.

"Today, we're excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos up to 10 minutes long, which we hope will open up more creative possibilities for our content creators around the world," said a TikTok spokesperson.

An increase in video time limits could make TikTok a bigger competitor to YouTube, which is fighting TikTok with a competitor feature dubbed Shorts.

Launching Engadget, Tuesday, March 1, with seven extra minutes of the previous duration, it will allow content creators to be more experimental with their content, and also reduce the chance of having to share longer content on more than one video.

This move, of course, benefits content creators who focus on make-up tutorials, cooking, and other types of content that might work better in a longer format.

However, some concerns have been raised about the new length of time, considering TikTok is also one of the social media used to share misinformation related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"We are continuing to closely monitor the situation, leveraging resources to respond to emerging trends and removing infringing content, including harmful misinformation and the promotion of violence," said a TikTok spokesperson.

"We are also partnering with independent fact-checking organizations to further assist our efforts to help TikTok remain a safe and authentic place."
