JAKARTA - YouTube wants to make it easier for users on mobile devices to know when their favorite channel is streaming live, by bringing a new feature called "Live Rings".
As Neal Mohan, YouTube's Chief Product Office explains via Twitter, the video platform is very focused on making it easier for users to find live streams.
The easiest way to do this, at least on mobile devices, is to add a red circle around the channel avatar along with the word LIVE, to indicate when the live stream is in progress.
If you find a channel that is currently broadcasting live, and want to watch it, then you just have to tap the LIVE icon located on the user's avatar to enter the live broadcast.
The new feature follows a redesign of the interface for YouTube on Android and iOS earlier this month, although it's rolling out slowly, and should make it easier to find currently streaming content as users browse YouTube.
Launching The Verge, Tuesday, February 22, this feature of course sounds familiar, because it has been used on several other services, such as TikTok. The Chinese social media uses a similar effect on channel profile pictures if they livestream as users scroll through their videos in the feed.
The same goes for Instagram, courtesy of Meta which also shows colorful ring-like indicators around the livestream account's profile picture when displayed at the top of the feed.
It seems the live ring UI is too perfect not to be integrated into YouTube. But the biggest example of the inspiration YouTube takes from TikTok is without a doubt Shorts, a feature that lets users browse short video content using a vertically scrolling feed.
