JAKARTA - General Motors Co's pre-production version of the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV has been assembled. GM President Mark Reuss said in a post on LinkedIn on Thursday, January 19, that the final production version is expected to be delivered to customers in the next few months.

Detroit-based GM recently stepped down from its position as the No. 1 US automaker, after competing against Ford Motor Co. for a century. Now they want to take over that position with plans to sell more electric vehicles by 2025.

"Our team has been working tirelessly on Lyriq, bringing the launch nine months ahead of schedule," Reuss said, as quoted by Reuters.

The Lyriq, an all-electric mid-size SUV, was unveiled by GM in August 2020 in a bid to transform its traditional combustion engine lineup into a fully electric engine.

Cadillac GM will offer Lyriq, Symboliq, Celestiq, Escalade EV as well as a compact SUV in 2025. This will become their new icon in the midst of industrial competition and electric car production.

Separately, GM itself suspended production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV model last August, following a massive battery recall. Even recently they also extended the suspension until the end of February.

According to sources and documents published in December, GM is considering investing more than $4 billion in two Michigan plants to increase its electric vehicle production capacity.

The plan shows that GM does not want to lose to yesterday afternoon's child in the automotive industry, Tesla, which has so far dominated the electric car market. Not only in the US, Tesla also controls the electric car market in the world.
