JAKARTA - It was recently reported that Apple is preparing an electric vehicle that is claimed to be similar to the Tesla Cybertruck, but it turns out that the company has focused more on its autonomous car.
Apple is reportedly speeding up development of the autonomous car included in Project Titan and is targeting 2025 as the launch date. That means in just four years Apple's self-driving cars will be officially on the road.
In developing autonomous cars, Apple did not involve outsiders to design the car chips. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the chip is the "most advanced component" that has been developed for Project Titan so far.
The company appears to have been gearing up to put the chip in a fleet of test vehicles in California, USA, and hopes to make vehicles with more robust protection than what's available from Tesla and Waymo.
To quote The Verge, Friday, November 19, the goal now for Project Titan, is to create an autonomous car that doesn't have a steering wheel. The interior will be more spacious and the seating will adopt the limousine style promoted by EV startup Canoo in its electric van prototype.
Additionally, there will be a large iPad-style touchscreen that will run a user interface, similar to iOS. Even so, it is not yet known for sure what business model Apple will do with this car.
Previously, Apple had considered creating a self-driving fleet to compete with Uber, Lyft and Waymo, but Gurman reports that it's more likely the company will sell cars to individuals.
