Sergi Barjuan's Position At Barcelona Is Only Temporary Until Xavi Arrives From Al Sadd

JAKARTA - Barcelona appointed their former captain, Sergi Barjuan as interim coach to replace Ronald Koeman who was sacked following the defeat against Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish League.

The Catalan club announced this information on the club's official website on Thursday evening. "FC Barcelona hereby announces that Sergi Barjuan, the current coach of Barcelona B, will take temporary charge of the technical management of the senior squad."

"His temporary position as head coach of the first team will end once the club recruits a permanent head coach to replace the sacked Ronald Koeman," read a statement from Barcelona.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta officially introduced Sergi Barjuan to the first squad before the training session at Ciutat Esportiva Thursday local time.

The match against Alaves on Sunday at the Camp Nou Stadium will be Sergi Barjuan's first match as coach of the Barcelona first team.

Previously, Barcelona had sacked Ronald Koeman on Thursday after his team lost 0-1 at Rayo Vallecano's headquarters. Laporta officially sacked Ronald Koeman after holding an emergency meeting with club officials.

Shortly after the Dutchman's sacking, rumors of a replacement for Koeman began to develop.

A number of names have emerged, but another Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez is the strongest candidate to be Koeman's replacement.

Xavi Hernandez is currently still the coach of Al-Sadd, a club participating in the Qatar League.

According to Sport, Al Sadd have promised Xavi that they will not stand in the way of his coach's departure if there is an offer from Barcelona. This is written in the contract signed by Xavi in May.
