JAKARTA - Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will continue to race for the Haas team in Formula One next season, the US-owned team said Thursday as quoted by Reuters.
The German and Russian riders that year were in a rookie season with Haas being the only team not to score points in 2021. Next year will be Haas' seventh season.
Mick Schumacher is the son of the great Ferrari legend and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. Meanwhile, Mazepin is the son of a Russian billionaire who controls the team's sponsor, Uralkali.
Ferrari provided the engine for this team, while Schumacher became a member of the driver's academy.
Haas boss Guenther Steiner said his team wanted continuity through 2022 which marks the start of a new era in which key rules are changed, after a year of learning for both drivers.
"Obviously it's been a difficult season with the package we have, but at the same time they both accepted the challenge and worked closely with the team to study our process and adapt to the rigors of the Formula One campaign," Steiner said.
"Now that we look to the 2022 season, we believe we can move forward as a team and provide Mick and Nikita with a competitive racing package to take the next step in their Formula One careers."
The two drivers have been at odds on the track this season so the team had to step in to calm things down.
"By being a part of this part of Formula One, I have made my dream come true," said Schumacher, who was looking forward to the hunt for points.
Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies said the 2020 F2 champion had shown "speed, determination, work ethic and strong desire, and the ability to learn."
"We firmly believe he will continue to make further progress in a team that shares the same ambitions," continued Mekies.
Mazepin, the only Russian F1 driver at the moment and preparing to race on his own earth in Sochi this weekend, said he was excited about 2022.
"I think we will be strong next year," he concluded.
