JAKARTA - The struggle of Indonesian representatives from badminton and archery has entered the knockout phase, while rowing will compete in the race for rankings at the Tokyo Olympics, Thursday, July 29.

Women's singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung became the first Indonesian athlete to appear today. Exactly at 07.00 WIB, he will compete with Thailand's representative Ratchanok Intanon for a ticket to the quarter-finals.

Launching Antara, Gregoria's journey in the knockout phase was not easy. To be able to advance to the next round, he must be able to get rid of Intanon, who is ranked sixth in the world, far above Gregoria at 23.

Even during the previous seven meetings, representatives of Indonesia had never won from Intanon. As happened in the last match at Malaysia Masters 2020, when Gregoria lost to Intanon with a score of 24-22, 19-21, 15-21.

Although statistically not seeded, Gregoria admitted that he would fight and did not want to waste the opportunity. "I don't care who the opponent I will face in the round of 16 later. I'm ready to give my best, whoever the opponent is. I don't want to waste this valuable opportunity," said Gregoria on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website, Wednesday .

Gregoria advanced to the round of 16 after completing the preliminary phase as the winner of Group M. He managed to clean up two matches by defeating Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar 21-11, 21-8 and Belgian representative Lianne Tan in two straight games 21-11, 21-17 .

These two victories became Gregoria's important capital in facing Intanon who was the winner of Group N.

After that, on the same day, two Indonesian men's doubles pairs, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, will compete against their respective opponents in the quarter-finals.

Kevin/Marcus are scheduled to play against Malaysian representatives Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik at 08:35 WIB. Then continued Ahsan / Hendra at 09:25 WIB to face the deputy host Takeshi Kamura / Keigo Sonoda to fight for the top four tickets.

Then it continued with the appearance of the archer from Indonesia, Diananda Choirunisa, who will compete with the archer from Denmark, Maja Jager, followed by Riau Ega Salsabila versus David Barnes from Australia.
